feeling alive, living, loving

What it Means to Really Be Alive

When I first left home at 19, I couldn’t wait to be out on my own! Wow! I thought, now I get to really start living! I believed that my new-found freedom and making my own decisions were all I needed to live a fantastic and exciting life. Little did I know, I’d have to learn an important lesson if I wanted to spend every day feeling really alive!

feeling alive, living, lovingThis lesson came to me over time, slow, yet persistent: to really Live is to Love, first the self and then everyone and everything else.

I began to see all of the connections. In a game of scrabble, the words, Love and Live are only one letter shy of being the same. They both represent an opportunity to use one of the more challenging letters, “V.” They are both worth 7 points. That is, unless one of the letters lands on a triple word block; then it would be worth 21, the age people think they have to be to really start “living.”

The words Live and Love aren’t just similar in their spelling or point value in Scrabble. I figured out that they’re interchangeable in almost every situation!

To really Live is to take risks and chances; to really Love is to take risks and chances.

To really Live you must accept what is; to really Love you must accept what is.

To really Live is to open your heart to the unknown; to really Love is to open your heart to the unknown.

To really Live is to trust beyond your imagination; to really Love is to trust beyond your imagination.

To really Live you must see yourself in the world rather than the world in yourself; to really Love you must see yourself in the world rather than the world in yourself.

To really Live is to allow wonderful, exciting and mysterious moments to fill our lives; to really Love is to allow wonderful, exciting and mysterious moments to fill our lives.

I began to think of these two words as synonymous and interchangeable in my life?

What if the essence of Love became the basis for how you Live? To Love…, to Live…, what’s the difference?

because, to really Live is to Love.

Living isn’t as much about “what” you do as “how” you do it. Loving isn’t about “what” you do; it’s about “how” you do it.

I guess there isn’t any difference at all – unless you’re not doing either.
